Klondike Solitaire Games
Klondike Solitaire, commonly called Solitaire or Patience, is arguably the most popular single player card game in the
world. It is almost certainly the most popular computer based card game in existence.
After being unleashed onto the world in 1990 with the 3.x series release of
Windows, this benchmark version of Klondike Solitaire has single-handedly undermined employee productivity ever since.
Despite its overwhelming popularity, the programmer who wrote the game received
no royalties for it whatsoever! There is an entertaining interview with the author of Windows Solitaire here.
The basic layout for a game of Klondike Solitaire involves dealing a standard 52-card deck of playing cards
in the following manner: deal one card face up on the left of the playing area, then six
cards face down from left to right. On top of the downturned cards, deal another
card face up on the left-most downturned pile, and face down cards on the others until all piles have an upturned card.
The result is a triangular distribution of cards on the table.
The aim of a Klondike Solitaire game is to build up four foundations by suite from
Ace to King. To achieve this, the tableau piles can be built down by alternating
colors by drawing additional cards from the remaining deck. The game is
considered won if all the cards are successfully sorted into suits.
